How to Intervene Safely: The 5D Bystander Framework

Learn simple, non-confrontational actions that can defuse harmful transit situations without endangering yourself.

Essential Key Points

  • Direct confrontation is not the only way to help someone in distress.
  • The 5Ds (Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, Direct) offer safe, practical choices.
  • Prioritize victim comfort and de-escalation over confrontation.

The 5D Action Model for Sri Lankan Buses & Trains

When you witness someone being harassed or cornered in a crowded vehicle:

Actionable Steps:
  • Distract: Pretend you know the victim, ask them for the time or the upcoming halt ('Is this Kollupitiya?').
  • Delegate: Alert the conductor, fellow passengers, or station security staff.
  • Document: Discreetly note vehicle numbers, times, and details if safe.
  • Delay: After the incident, check in with the person ('Are you okay? Can I sit with you?').
  • Direct: If completely safe, firmly speak up ('Leave them alone, please step back').
